10th Planet jiu-jitsu Melbourne

Eddie Bravo
"The Truth about the Rubber Guard"

Sensei Frank Barca - of the Precision Martial Arts Academy in Melbourne

For those unaware, 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu is the highly effective BJJ & MMA system developed by the Jean Jacques Machado Black Belt, Eddie Bravo. Known world-wide as one of the most innovative, passionate, and systematic BJJ instructors, Eddie’s game is slowly changing the face of MMA. He first became famous for using his unique strategies to defeat Royler Gracie in ADCC 2003, the only American to ever have scored a single point against Royler Gracie, let alone, submit him. Today they have evolved into a powerful and imposing strategy for dominating in BJJ & MMA worldwide.

Frank Barca has trained every year at 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu in Hollywood California from 2006 - 2008 for 3 weeks per tour, coming in contact with MMA legends, Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture & Bas Rutten.

Frank Barca also trained with Karo ‘The Heat’ Parisian, Chris Reilly, Amir Rahnavardi and all of Eddie’s top Brown belts, such as Scott Epstein, Brent Littel, Alder Hampel, Joe Rogan, Alex (4sakensoul), Sean Bollinger, Conor Heun, and many other talented, professional, Mixed Martial Artists in the MMA/UFC arena.

Frank Barca , of the Precision Martial Arts Academy in Melbourne, was recently awarded, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Affiliation by Eddie Bravo, during his 3 rd trip to LA training at the world famous 'Legends MMA Gym' in Hollywood California. Frank has been Eddie Bravo’s 1st generation student since 2006.

Frank was also graded by Eddie Bravo and is now teaching 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu in Melbourne.

Frank Barca is the only person outside of America and North America who is licensed to teach authentic 10th Planet Rubber guard, Twister and Half-guard attacks, learnt directly from Eddie Bravo.

The Affiliation is based on mastering 75% of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system, minimum of 4 years in grappling and proven mat sparring application of the world famous 10th Planet JJ System. Frank opened 10th Planet JJ Melbourne officially on the 1st December 2008, and now has made it available for anyone who wants to benefit from Eddie Bravo’s unique, no gi approach to submission grappling.

Frank has just recently returned home from teaching 10th Planet JJ seminars in Brisbane, all of which were a great success and proven to be extremely popular among submission fighters and the MMA community.

Eddie Bravo

The Jean Jacques Machado black belt started training BJJ in May 1994.

Eddie Bravo won the Abu Dhabi North American Trials Lightweight Division on October 5, 2002, in San Diego, California, earning the Most Technical Fighter of The Night award and went on to the 2003 Abu Dhabi Championships in San Paulo, Brazil, where he secured a submission win over legendary Royler Gracie.

He is also known for his mixed martial arts commentating on the Ultimate Fighting Championship as well as music composition.

He lives in Hollywood, California, where he runs his 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu school out of Legends MMA, a gym also featuring Randy Couture and Bas Rutten.

2nd - 10th Planet Seminar Report

Last fortnight we conducted another 10th Planet Jiu Jisu seminar with Sensei Frank Barca from Melbourne.  It was a great weekend and we covered lots of revision and new territory.  Of particular interest was the tournament prep drills and strategy work we completed on day 2.  Our ground game will be No Gi and very much 10th Planet oriented with a few of my own add ins to keep us unique.  We will compete next year for Zen Chi Ryu in a range of Local, State and National tournaments.  I was impressed with how quickly we picked up on our ground game after no real focus here during the Warrior Way preparation.  We will work diligently over the Christmas break to refine the game as taught to us by Sensei Frank Barca.

Frank was fresh back from L.A. and earning his Purple Belt from Master Eddie Bravo, so it was awesome to get the latest curriculum revisions.  10th Planet continues to evolve with proven No Gi techniques.

1st - 10th Planet Seminar Report - Elevated to a 10th Planet

Finally we made it to this weekend.  Our 10th Planet JJ Seminar facilitated by the energetic Sensei Frank Barca was outstanding!  We ended up with 4 late withdrawals so we had 25 keen people ready to accelerate their ground game and have their minds open to the reality of No Gi grappling that works.  We welcomed new friends into our dojo from Rockhampton, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.  Tamati gets the prize for dedication as he drove for 7 hrs with only 20 mins sleep to be there.

On Saturday we went through the history of 10th Planet JJ, it's philosophy and main concepts.  We then worked on the start of the basic techniques, and I can tell you it makes the world of difference having an instructor as competent and Frank to help.  We have been working out of Master Eddie's book for the last 5 months and we were missing a lot of small items that make the difference.

10th Planet Concepts

* Sensei's Trips to see Master Eddie Bravo
* Warm up drills
* Stretching routines
* System layout
* Naming conventions
From the half guard position -

* Lock down
* Whip Up
* Old School
* Electric Chair sweep & Electric Chair submission
* Stoner Control
* Stoner Circuit
* Wiper Pass

Saturday night was a change of pace with a great dinner party for the senior students and Frank.  Kate put on an amazing "Steam Boat" style meal.  Brad entertained us as usual with his humour and Australianisms.  Plenty of war stories and philosophies of life were exchanged.

On Sunday we headed back to the mat.  Lots of sore calves but everyone was still as keen as mustard to delve further into this system.

We revised everything from Saturday's class then moved onto;

From the rubber guard position -
* Breaking down your opponent
* Mission control
* Zombie
* New York
* Clearing the neck
* Chill Dog
* Kung Fu Move
* Jiu Claw
* Omaplata
* Jiu Claw to traditional arm bar
From the traditional side control position –
* Darce Choke - from front and side on
* Twister side control
* Baby arm bar
* Grape Vine
* Twister Roll
* The Truck
* Star Wars control and calf cranks
* Kamikaze calf slice/crank
* Crotch ripper
* Banana Split

Sensei Frank then went on a free roll with Sempai Andrew.  He moved through everything he had shown us and added a full range of variations to each attack and submission.  It was awesome to watch and drew a huge applause from the group.

Sunday's session wound up with a great Q&A and another quality lunch supplied by the Zen Ladies.  Thank-you to all students who helped to pack up and move the mats on both Saturday and Sunday - it is very much appreciated.  If any of you have any spare time on Friday evening, I am sure that Sempai Nathan would appreciate a little assistance in setting up the mats for this weekend as they are in no particular order and it will take quite a while to rearrange them as we like them.

Well the journey has started.  Now we have to put the reps into what we have been taught.  So Friday nights will continue to be devoted to the ground game and lifting our skills before Sensei Frank returns at the end of the year to check our progress.

For me the best part of this weekend was meeting new people on the same journey and establishing solid relationships that will serve to enhance all parties as they push forward with their own training and dojo development.

Conceive, Believe, Achieve and put the reps in team!
