Peter Reilly - Queensland Alumina Ltd
Fluid Bed Calciner Multimedia Training Package

Queensland Alumina Ltd’s (QAL) Fluid Bed Calciner multimedia training package was custom designed by Peter Reilly and developed for Queensland Alumina by the Interactive Multimedia Unit, Central Queensland University. The package features animations designed to enhance a trainee’s understanding of the process which occurs inside the Fluid Bed Calciner, a complex apparatus used in the processing of Alumina. It also provides a well-rounded training program which emphasises operator knowledge, skill and safety.

Trainees complete the multimedia component of their training in preparation for hands-on sessions with an experienced operator. The multimedia facet eases the transition from theory to practice and after using the self-paced materials trainees report an increase in self-confidence and motivation.

Training modules have been divided into small manageable sections which learners can work through at their own pace with audio options for each screen and online help facilities. Trainee learning is supported by limited text supported by full narration, a variety of photos and video clips utilising fellow operators, easily accessible help, equipment simulations, activities and assessment and continuous availability for shift workers
