My Reflections as Sensei

Welcome to the Zen Chi Ryu Enabling Arts Dojo Web Journal (Blog).

This page is dedicated to sharing what has happened each Month in our dojo, reflecting on my journey as Sensei and Martial Arts Student.  I will also try to project forward to discuss upcoming events and ideas.  I hope you enjoy my reflections and keep checking back to keep up with what is happening at our Dojo.

Why do this, when we already have a Yahoo discussion site and a website for our style?  It's an interesting question. I guess in short I see communication as one of the major keys to success and building relationships.  As a Martial Arts  Instructor I need to communicate to a diverse audience which may include readers of this page such as: Present, Past & Future Students, Parents and family of our students, Students and Instructors from other Dojos.

With this in mind I will be as honest and as careful as I can with what is posted here.  Please do not judge INTENT if I make an error.  Just give me feedback which I will take on board.  I will still post news on the Zen Chi Ryu website and private material on our Yahoo discussion site.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our kids class development we have sponsored a child with our class fees through World Vision.

Elias is Age 12 and lives in one of the poorest countries in the world - Ethiopia.  He enjoys group games such as soccer and we are sure he will love Zen Chi Ryu as the kids write to him and send him cards.

10th August 2010 - Greet the Dawn

The weekend of the 24th July, saw our Dojo hold a Kata competition for all classes including kids, tweens, teens and adults.  This comp was a part of the preparations for the upcoming Warrior Camp and was well received by the students.  It was obvious that most had practiced hard with some amazing Kata's utilising spontaneous weapons produced on the day including a thong kata and a kata with crayons.  Everyone competed in good spirit and the standard of performances was very high.  Medals were awarded in some categories for 1st Place with ribbons awarded for second, third and high achievement.  There was an overall trophy for the best of the primary, secondary and adult performances on the day.  Bring on the Warrior Way.

.

On Friday evening, 30th July, we held a Pizza and DVD night for the kids and teens, however, there appeared to be quite a number of adults there to watch the original Karate Kid Movie.  27 Pizzas were consumed in about 15 minutes with about 80 small bottles of soft drink washing it down.  We had about 40 kids on the mats at the Dojo and about that many again of parents and senior students.  It was a great night and one that we will repeat next year.

What an amazing dawn beach session we had on Saturday 31st July.  Gathering at 5.30am at Tannum Sands beach the crew was greeted by a heavy, smothering sea fog that made the event even more stimulating for the senses.  We warmed up then meditated as the sun rose behind the fog.  We worked on our Kata's and Kihons in the surf and played with few interesting take downs in the sand dunes.  We then returned to the water and meditated to finish off the session.  The ladies cooked an amazing BBQ breakfast to fill empty stomaches.

I will let the photos speak for themselves now.  Our amazing photographer Adam Rossow did the deed again with some amazing shots.  Thanks for getting up early and sharing this amazing session with us Adam.

.

Stay safe, happy and contented.

This is what I know to be true......"Data becomes information.  Information becomes knowledge.  When knowledge is applied and changes observable behaviour we have created learning.  When learning is leveraged to create change, we have experience.  When experience is shared we grow. This in my humble opinion, is wisdom." -P.J. Reilly

An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t. It’s knowing where to go to find out what you need to know; and it’s knowing how to use the information you get - William Feather.

You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. ...The Matrix.

"It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired-you quit when the gorilla is tired.”   Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard.

The purpose of today’s training….is to defeat yesterday’s understanding.”
The famed swordsman Miyamoto Musashi
(1584 – 1645)

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom:   The music is nothing if the audience is deaf.
Walter Lippman
